End of January almost, nights are still long but the air is touching the spring with a crisp 15 degrees temperature, perfect for pondering the mysteries of the universe at mountain peaks in Ioannina. And so, with a heart full of curiosity and a backpack full of important questions, we set off from downtown in search of divine inspiration. Because, let’s be real, if the heavens are going to speak to anyone, it might as well be us, right?
Our journey takes us to sacred monasteries and chapels. These places are where human ingenuity meets divine inspiration, and the result is nothing short of miraculous. Each destination offers a moment to reflect, marvel, and walk in peace, feeling the vastness of nature that opens new horizons in our journey.
The Holy Monastery of Panagia Tsouka, founded in 1190, stands as an ode to the universe, a calligraphy of divine inspiration engraved in the Ioannina landscape. Perched at an impressive 760 meters is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. This high-flying sanctuary gets its name from the local word "Tsioúka," meaning "high peak". Legend has it, a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary kept playing hide-and-seek on a rock called "Tsioúka." No matter where they moved it, the icon always found its way back. It's a pilgrimage destination that invites visitors to reach for the skies (literally) and feel divinity embedded in the very framework of this place. For those looking to stay a while, the monastery offers dormitories for visitors. You can stay for up to 3 days, with stays available year-round, though the most popular times are during Easter and the summer months. Terms include a modest fee, and guests are encouraged to participate in the daily prayers and activities to fully immerse themselves in the monastic experience.

Profitis Ilias chapel stands on a limestone precipice with sheer drops on three sides, making it look like it's floating between earth and sky. If you’ve ever fancied a game of “don’t look down,” this is your spot. The panoramic views of deep gorges and sun-kissed peaks create nature's own reading room with views that could inspire even the most unpoetic of souls. Here, wrapped in absolute stillness and crowned by endless skies, your thoughts can float as freely as the river below, just be sure they don’t float right off the edge! Like many mountain chapels dedicated to Prophet Elias (Profitis Ilias) in Greece, it was built high above the world, following the ancient tradition of honoring the prophet on mountaintops, this testament to faith and craftsmanship continues its centuries-old vigil over the sacred landscapes of Greece.

Traditionally, buildings over here tell a story written in stratified stone - massive blocks up to 80cm thick at the base, dancing upward in an elegant diminuendo of size and width, crowned with flat stone slabs. Nature's own handiwork, pressed and layered over millennia in Earth's crust, now rises again in these walls, each stone finding its perfect place in the irregular yet harmonious puzzle. The wooden portals, crafted by hands that understood both beauty and function, have aged into a sublime harmony with their surroundings, their weathered surfaces resembling the hues of the stone. From the snow-defying roofs to the insulating stone layers, a profound understanding between builder and mountain is present. Sustainability is a centuries-old practice, where the abundance of local stone meets masterful craftsmanship.

Deep in the heart of Kostitsi village, where cobblestone streets whisper ancient tales and stone houses stand proud against the Ioannina sky, lurks our favorite "Bad Wolf" - though this Kakos Lykos prefers hosting guests to huffing and puffing houses down! Surrounded by trails and wild rivers perfect for rafting and kayaking adventures, this wolf's den serves as the perfect base for all wandering souls. Whether you're seeking mountain thrills or cozy traditional comfort, this charming "wolf" welcomes everyone to its picturesque corner of Greece - just don't blame us if its natural beauty and warm hospitality make you want to howl with joy and extend your stay!
Project Anti-Gravity Revealed: The Tzoumerka Files. In a breakthrough, our investigative team has uncovered what appears to be the world's first anti-gravity testing facility, cleverly disguised as an abandoned construction site in the mysterious Tzoumerka mountains. Our thorough "scientific investigation" (peer-reviewed by several mountain goats and one very confused shepherd) has documented the impossible. When certain world leaders start making extraordinary claims about revolutionary anti-gravity technology, remember this moment. Remember where you first glimpsed humanity's next great leap - right here in the cradle of civilization, where wisdom meets modern impossibility. We'd reveal more, but our measuring equipment mysteriously floated away during the investigation. Coincidence? We think not!
As our journey draws to a close, we’re gently reminded that the search for meaning is a path without end. The quiet, transformative power of these moments acts as a force that propels us forward. And if the weight of it all feels too heavy, let us immerse ourselves in history and the funny artifacts with the energy and humor that rises from it, stand tall, breathe deeply, smile, and take in the view. For in embracing the beauty of the present, we might find the courage to continue our endless, wondrous exploration.
With gratitude and hope for a sustainable, beautiful, exciting, and abundant future.
