Olsztyn was founded in the mid-14th century by the Teutonic Knights , who erected an imposing castle in 1334 and granted city rights in 1353. Olsztyn became part of Poland in 1466. It's a place where Nicolaus Copernicus once resided. It lies about 215 kilometers north of Warsaw in the Warmian-Masurian region. It is home to around 170,000 souls, and is characterized by a blend of Gothic grandeur and natural beauty, cobblestone streets alive with cafes, surrounded by 15 lakes within city limits (like the bustling Ukiel for sailing and sandy beaches), lush forests that invite kayaking, biking, and soul-soothing strolls.
