A Memorable Weekend in Ioannina: Our Stay at Philotimia

Last weekend we in optimalstay were hosting a very nice family from Greece We kindly asked our guests to record the highlights in short for this 3 days journey, they accepted our request, therefore, we are very thankful to John and his family!

Philotimia is a charming short-term rental apartment located at Vasileiou Ariva 30, 45332 Ioannina, Greece. This cozy apartment became our home away from home for those three days, and it was the perfect base for exploring the beautiful city of Ioannina.
Day 1: Arrival and Exploring the Neighborhood
We arrived at Philotimia on Friday afternoon. The apartment was spacious and well-equipped, with two bedrooms, a fully stocked kitchen, and a lovely balcony that offered a great view of the surrounding area. The kids, aged 11 and 13, were thrilled with the comfortable living room and the fast Wi-Fi.
After settling in, we decided to take a stroll around the neighborhood. We discovered the delightful café Mantzios just a short walk away, where we enjoyed some delicious Greek pastries, ice cream, and coffee. Around 5:30 pm we indulged in some shopping in the city center. Ioannina offers a variety of shops, from traditional crafts to modern boutiques. We picked up some souvenirs and enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere of the local markets.

For dinner, we visited Restaurant Frontzou Politeia, a cozy spot with an astonishing view over the town and the lake known for its exceptional quality and tasteful dishes.
Day 2: Silversmithing Workshop and Lake Pamvotis
Saturday morning was spent at the Silversmithing Workshop. This hands-on experience was a highlight of our trip. We learned about the intricate art of silversmithing and even bought some small pieces of jewelry. The kids were fascinated, and it was a unique way to connect with the local culture.
In the early afternoon, we made a brief detour to the picturesque village of Lingiades, perched high above Ioannina. Renowned for its panoramic views of Lake Pamvotis and the city below, Lingiades offered us a serene escape.
In the afternoon, we headed to Lake Pamvotis. The lake’s serene beauty was captivating, and we enjoyed a leisurely boat ride to the island in the middle of the lake Pamvotis. The island is home to a monastery and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. We also ate crayfish by the lake fresh troutes and other local delicacies.
Day 3: Exploring Ioannina’s Rich History
Our final day was dedicated to exploring Ioannina’s historical sites. We started with the Dodoni Theater, one of the oldest and best-preserved ancient theaters in Greece. The sheer size and acoustics of the theater were remarkable, and it was fascinating to imagine the performances that once took place there.

Next, we ventured to the Perama Cave, a short drive from the city. The cave’s impressive stalactites and stalagmites left us in awe. The 1 hour guided tour was both educational and entertaining, making it a great family activity.
In the evening we visited the castle of Ioannina, a well-preserved fortress that offers a glimpse into the city’s past. The kids loved exploring the ancient walls and towers.

Conclusion
Our weekend at Philotimia in Ioannina was truly unforgettable. The combination of comfortable accommodation, rich cultural experiences, and beautiful natural scenery made it a perfect getaway for our family. If you’re planning a trip to Ioannina, I highly recommend staying at Philotimia and exploring all that this charming city has to offer.
Happy traveling, John!
